Is ChatGPT Pro 200 dropping to 10x on Oct 30? What OpenAI confirms vs. what the email says
OpenAI confirms the old ChatGPT Pro 200 allowance ends October 29 and the price stays at $200. The 10x Codex limit, 100 weekly messages and 62,500 credits come from an email a user posted on Hacker News. What's confirmed, what isn't, and what to do with your limits before October 30.

Short answer: OpenAI's help center confirms that eligible Pro 200 subscriptions keep the previous allowance through October 29, 2026, then move to a lower included allowance at the same $200 a month. What OpenAI does not publish is how much lower. The "20x to 10x" figure for Codex, the cut from 200 to 100 weekly GPT-6 Pro messages and the 62,500 bonus credits all come from an email a user says they received and posted on Hacker News. OpenAI hasn't confirmed those numbers publicly. Below is the full split, plus a checklist for the hours left before the change.
"Pro 200 drops to 10x" has been making the rounds since late September. It gets repeated on X, in forums and in developer chats as if it were official, especially by people who live in Codex. The change kicks in tomorrow, October 30, so it's worth knowing which parts OpenAI actually stands behind and which parts are a forwarded email.
I read OpenAI's help page on Pro plans on the morning of October 28 (it said "Updated: 23 hours ago") and the Hacker News thread where the email surfaced. Everything below is linked and, unless marked "own check," is according to the cited source. Times are UTC.
What OpenAI confirms on its help page
All of this is from About ChatGPT Pro tiers, OpenAI's official page on Pro plans:
- Three monthly Pro plans: Pro 100 at $100, Pro 200 at $200 and Pro 500 at $500. Only Pro 500 includes Ultrafast. Per the page, Pro 200 includes more usage than Pro 100, and Pro 500 has the most of the three.
- Who keeps the old allowance: anyone with an active Pro 200 subscription at any point from September 22, 2026 through 10 a.m. Pacific Time on September 29, 2026 (17:00 UTC). Those accounts can use the previous included allowance through October 29, 2026, as long as the subscription stays active.
- What happens next: "After that date, your subscription will move to the lower included usage allowance." The price stays at $200 a month.
- Who gets an email: "Only users affected by this change will receive an email with additional details." So OpenAI confirms an email exists for affected users. It doesn't publish what's in it.
- New Pro 200 subscriptions: available again, but anyone outside that window gets "a lower usage allowance than previously offered," which OpenAI attributes to its models getting more efficient.
- Keeping the allowance doesn't change your plan: you stay on Pro 200, with no upgrade to Pro 500 and no Ultrafast.
- Cancel and come back: if your Pro 200 ended and you resubscribe on the same account, you keep the previous allowance through October 29 only if you were inside that same September window. Scheduling a cancellation doesn't cut you off; you keep access until the end of the billing period and can undo it.
- Fast and Ultrafast burn faster: compared with Standard mode on the same model, Fast uses your included allowance at 2.5 times the rate. Ultrafast (Pro 500 only, for GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol) uses it at 8 times the rate, then bills credits at 6 times the Standard credit rate. The page notes these are consumption rates, not speed guarantees.
- Credits: you can buy credits to keep going after the included allowance runs out. Included usage goes first, credits second. They cover Codex, ChatGPT Work and ChatGPT for Word, Excel and PowerPoint, not every model or feature. Buying credits on Pro 100 or Pro 200 doesn't unlock Ultrafast. Your balance lives under Settings → Usage in ChatGPT or Usage & Billing in Codex.
- Support can't reset limits: "Support cannot reset ChatGPT or Codex limits." It can only investigate miscounted usage or access that didn't come back after a reset.
- What drives usage: the model, how much context gets processed, reasoning, tool use, information retrieval, caching and speed mode.
- Monthly billing only: no annual plan, no paying months ahead. Plan changes are under Settings → My Plan.
Own check: neither that page nor ChatGPT's pricing page gives a multiplier for Pro 200. The pricing page just says "Your choice of 3 usage tiers" and lists Codex as "Expanded" on Pro.
Status: the October 29 cutoff and the unchanged price are confirmed. The size of the cut isn't.
What the email posted on Hacker News says
On September 29, 2026 at 21:42 UTC, user illuminated opened the thread "Tell HN: OpenAI's New Pro 500 subscription, reduced Pro 200 usage" with "As a Pro subscriber, I've just received the following email from OpenAI," followed by the full text. According to that email:
- Codex and ChatGPT Work, 20x to 10x: "Starting October 30, 2026, your included usage in ChatGPT Work and Codex will decrease from 20 times to 10 times the ChatGPT Plus allowance."
- GPT-6 Pro in Chat, 200 to 100 messages a week: "Your GPT-6 Pro limit in Chat will decrease from 200 to 100 messages per week."
- Same price, current limits through Oct 29: "Your price remains unchanged and you'll keep your current limits through October 29, 2026."
- 62,500 bonus credits: "a one-time grant of 62,500 usage credits (a $2,500 USD value)," showing up under Settings > Usage, expiring December 31, 2026, and governed by the "Service Credit Terms."
- No 5-hour limit: OpenAI commits to not reintroducing the 5-hour limit, so you can use your weekly allowance whenever you want.
- Pro 500: "25 times the usage of Plus," plus Ultrafast with "up to 8 times faster token generation."
- dots: always-on "dots" agents powered by GPT-6 Astra, included with Pro and not drawing on your ChatGPT allowance.
List cost, every week
The weekly newsletter covers what I test with models and the table already measured: Astra $1.14, Kimi $1.21 and Opus $3.10 list cost, not the amount billed. One task, October 2026.
### The caveats, and they matter
- It's pasted text, not a screenshot or an OpenAI link. The greeting reads "Hi [FirstName]," so at least that line was edited. There's no way to verify from the outside that the rest is untouched.
- The thread barely moved: 3 points and 2 comments, one of them pointing to other discussions of the same topic. Nobody from OpenAI weighed in.
- The official page lines up on the broad strokes: the October 29 date, the unchanged price, Pro 500 with Ultrafast, and an email going to affected users. It confirms none of the numbers: not 20x, not 10x, not 100 messages, not 62,500 credits, not Pro 500's 25x.
- Watch the "8x" on Ultrafast: the email means token generation up to 8 times faster. The help page uses the same number for something else: Ultrafast eats your included allowance at 8 times the Standard rate. Different things.
- "10x" is relative: even if the email is genuine, 10x is measured against the Plus allowance, and OpenAI doesn't publish that in absolute terms. Nobody can tell you exactly how many Codex tasks it buys.
Status: an email posted by a user, consistent with the official page on dates and price, with numbers OpenAI hasn't confirmed publicly.

So I'm on Pro 200. Does this hit me?
Start with whether you're in the group that keeps the old allowance through October 29. Per the official page, you needed an active Pro 200 subscription at some point between September 22 and 17:00 UTC on September 29. If you subscribed later, you're already on the new allowance and October 30 changes nothing for you.
If you are in the group, OpenAI says you'll get an email with the details. That email, yours rather than the one going around, is the source that counts for your account. Compare it with the Hacker News text. If the numbers match, that's a second confirmation; if they don't, trust yours.
Checklist: what to do before October 30
1. Check whether you're in the window. Look at your billing history for an active Pro 200 subscription between September 22 and 29. That's the condition on the official page for keeping the old allowance through October 29.
2. Find OpenAI's email. Per the help page, only affected users get one. Check spam and promotions too. If you have it, keep it: it's the only thing that tells you your numbers.
3. Open Settings → Usage. That's where the official page says your credit balance lives, and where the email posted on Hacker News says the 62,500 credits would appear. If they're there, note the expiration date shown. If they aren't, don't count on them.
4. Measure what you use today. Write down how much of your weekly allowance you burn in Codex and ChatGPT Work right now. Without that baseline you won't be able to compare after October 30, because OpenAI doesn't publish absolute limits.
5. Pull heavy work forward. If you have long refactors or big Codex sessions planned for this week, the official page confirms the old allowance applies through October 29. After that, there's less of it.
6. Turn off Fast for anything that isn't urgent. Fast uses your included allowance at 2.5 times the Standard rate, per the official page. On a smaller allowance you'll feel that sooner.
7. Trim context. Usage depends on how much context gets processed, on reasoning and on tool calls. Shorter sessions and tightly scoped files cost less.
8. Don't cancel to "reset." Canceling and resubscribing doesn't stretch the old allowance past October 29, and you only keep it at all if you were in the September window.
9. If you'll run short, compare before you pay. Your official options are buying credits (they cover Codex, ChatGPT Work and the Office add-ins, not everything), dropping to Pro 100 or moving up to Pro 500. Plan changes are under Settings → My Plan.
10. Don't expect support to give you allowance back. OpenAI says support can't reset limits; it only checks for miscounted usage.
Bottom line
Pro 200 changing after October 29 isn't a rumor. OpenAI says so on its help page, with a date, eligibility rules and a price. What's still not publicly confirmed is the number everyone keeps quoting. The 10x, the 100 messages and the 62,500 credits come from an email a user pasted on Hacker News. It's consistent with the official page, but it isn't the official page.
To decide what to do on October 30, you don't need someone else's email. You need yours, your Usage screen and a baseline of what you use today.
